EVER THOUGHT ABOUT BEING A COUNCILLOR?

The 2nd May 2019 is going to be a busy day in the elections calendar and the date is fast approaching! This is the time that local elections for District Councillors will be held for all 36 seats across the Torridge area. It’s the day our residents have the chance to choose who they want to represent them for the next 4 years as District Councillors sitting on Torridge District Council.

If you’ve ever considered standing for election then this could be your opportunity to put yourself forward at the ballot box?

To discover more about the role and what is involved, we would like to invite anyone with an interest, to come along to our ‘Prospective Candidates’ evening on Wednesday 6th March at 6pm. The open evening will be at Bideford Town Hall, and there is no need to pre-register, just turn up on the night.

Briefings on the night will go into more detail about the role of being a Councillor as well as how to complete the nomination process and put your name forward. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and nomination papers will be available to take away on the night.

The Councils ‘Thinking about being a Councillor?’ guide is now available online under the elections section of the Torridge Website.

Councillor Jane Whittaker – Leader Torridge District Council said:

‘There are many reasons why people become Councillors,  for me it was a natural progression as a consequence of spending many years working in the Voluntary and Community sectors throughout Torridge and North Devon. While cuts in central government grants have made recent times somewhat challenging, we still have a real ‘can-do’ team spirit amongst the Councillors here at Torridge and long may that continue! We need people from all walks of life to represent their communities, so I would encourage people not to pre-judge whether they might or might not be suitable for the role. Just come along and find out about what is ultimately a great way of giving back. And then seriously consider taking part in helping to shape the future of your area.’

So if you are just contemplating the idea, are already committed to applying or are just intrigued about the role please make a date in your diary for 6th March. Both officers and Councillors look forward to welcoming everyone on the evening.
